Enfield Receives Grant to Assist Veterans' Housing

ENFIELD, CT — The Enfield Housing Authority has been awarded a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), totaling more than $21,000, to support a housing program coordinated through HUD that combines HUD’s Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) rental assistance for homeless veterans program with case management and clinical services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

The Enfield Housing Authority previously supported five housing vouchers for homeless veterans, with this new federal funding they will be able to support an additional five vouchers.

“These federal vouchers have always made a real difference for the men and women who served our country bravely,” U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney said in a written announcement. “These folks protected us, and they served our country proudly – each of them deserves to live an honorable, dignified life after their service, and we must do more as a nation to ensure they have the ability to do so. I have always been proud to represent a Congressional District that’s home to more veterans than anywhere else in Connecticut, and I’m glad to see these federal resources coming home to eastern Connecticut where they’ll be put to use assisting some of our veterans who need it most.”

“The Enfield Housing Authority is very pleased to be awarded five additional Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing vouchers,” said Scott Bertrand, Executive Director of the Enfield Housing Authority. “This will enable the EHA to double the number of homeless veterans and their families that we can assist in accessing affordable housing opportunities and the important supportive services. The EHA will coordinate with recipients to identify quality apartments in the area which may include housing solutions within our existing and planned housing developments. It is important that we get the word out to those in need. Individuals who are facing hardship should contact our VA partner in West Haven. Local rental property owners who are interested in participating in the program should contact the Enfield Housing Authority. I would like to thank Congressman Courtney and our local HUD Office for expanding this vital program in North Central Connecticut.”

The Housing Authority of the Town of Enfield will receive a federal grant award of $21,420 through the HUD’s Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program. The HUD-VASH program combines HCV rental assistance for homeless veterans program with case management and clinical services provided by the VA. The VA provides these services for participating veterans at VA medical centers and community-based outreach clinics.
