Enfield War Veteran, Historical Expert Passes Away

Stanley Dynia was a World War II veteran who was heavily involved in the Enfield community for decades.

ENFIELD, CT - Stanley J. Dynia, a well-known Enfield resident and unofficial historian of the town, passed away Wednesday at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Mass. He was 94.

A 1938 graduate of Enfield High School, Dynia spent his entire life in town, documenting numerous local events and landmarks with his ever-present camera.

After serving in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theater during World War II, he returned to Enfield and began a decades-long association with such community groups as the Polish National Home, the John Maciolek American Legion Post 154 and the Enfield Historical Society.

"Very sad news to learn about the passing of Stanley Dynia," Enfield Mayor Scott Kaupin said. "Stanley was very involved in our community for years and with a number of organizations and efforts. Stanley's dedication to Enfield and Hazardville lives on though through the service and dedication his children learned from him. This year's Scantic Spring Splash will have an extra special angel watching over the organizers and paddlers on March 26."

In 1996, Dynia became an original committee member of the Enfield Athletic Hall of Fame, and served on that board until he was into his late 80s.

Hall of Fame Chairman Michael Cotnoir said, "Stan was a tremendous inspirational force in helping get the Hall of Fame off the ground. His knowledge of Enfield history, especially the sports and Polish communities, really helped give the Hall of Fame a good starting point. His tireless passion and dedication to preserving the memories of the town of Enfield was truly amazing. For many years, he would bring almost 100 of his personal photos related to sports to Hall of Fame events, which was always a big hit. He'll be truly missed as one of our Hall of Fame founders, and we send our condolences to the Dynia family."

Dynia leaves his wife of 68 years, the former Stella Swist, three sons, a daughter and numerous grandchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

His funeral will be Monday, March 21 at 11 a.m. at St. Bernard Church in Enfield. Calling hours are Saturday, March 19 from 4-7 p.m. at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels.
