Cheaper alternatives to vacations

As fuel prices rise, so do the costs of vacations. Those trips to our favorite spots may be out of the budget this year, but that is no reason to give up on the prospect of relaxing and having fun with the family. We’ve compiled some great local attractions that you can visit during your staycation, all within about an hour of your home.

1. Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory & Gardens

2. Vintage Radio and Communications Museum of Connecticut

Where: 115 Pierson Lane, Windsor, CT

Why go: Receive a personal tour or wander around at your leisure as you learn about the history of radio and communication. See for yourself how we came to live in a world of cell phones, computers and TVs. Mention “staycation” and receive $1 off admission.

3. Cassidy Hill Vineyard

Where: 454 Cassidy Hill Road, Coventry, CT

Why go: Visit the tasting room in the log cabin winery and stroll through the vineyard or enjoy a glass of wine on the porch. A great place to relax and take in the beautiful vistas.

Price: Tastings are $5

4. Trash Museum

Where: 211 Murphy Road, Hartford, CT

Why go: Tour the educational exhibits beginning at the Temple of Trash and learn about the problems of old-fashioned methods of disposal. Follow a newspaper as it travels the new single-stream recycling facility and learn the history of trash.

Price: $2 admission, children under 3 are free

5. Yankee Candle Flagship Store

Where: 25 Greenfield Road, South Deerfield, MA

Why go: You will find 400,000 candles in over 200 different famous Yankee scents. It’s a unique, entertaining world of New England charm, fairy tale fantasies and hands-on, interactive candle making that’s fun for every age.
