Picture Enfield - Then and Now
An old photograph and story from Enfield history and how that site appears today, plus a trivia question about the town.

ENFIELD, CT — Today's installment of this weekly Enfield history series, courtesy of the Facebook group Picture Enfield, shows an aerial view from the mid-1970s of the area between Interstate 91 and the former Thaddeus Kosciuszko Junior High School on Elm Street. Five locations have been indicated on the old photo:
A. The Enfield Square shopping mall, which was still relatively new at the time and actually had cars in the parking lot. The vacant land to the north eventually became Friendly's, Wendy's, Figaro Restaurant and Outback Steakhouse.
B. Elm Plaza, which contained W.T. Grant's and Food Mart as anchor stores, now anchored by Kohl's and Best Buy.

C. Freshwater Boulevard was a dead end, built strictly for shoppers of the Square and State Line Plaza. It was later extended to intersect with Hazard Avenue and continue through the industrial park area.
D. Palomba Drive had not yet been constructed, so no car dealerships or post office are in sight; Cranbrook Boulevard was also not yet in existence.

E. The grounds behind Kosciuszko, prior to construction of the Little League diamond (and later, two other small baseball fields). Note there was no parking lot behind the school at that time.
Courtesy of Google Maps, here is a more contemporary look at the same area (though the image has not been updated since construction of the large machine technology addition in the rear of Asnuntuck Community College):

Last week's trivia answer:
Last week's trivia question was, "When the Enfield Suburban Mall on Hazard Avenue opened nearly 50 years ago, on Nov. 4, 1969, what were the two anchor stores?" The answer: Woolco and Sage-Allen. Here is an aerial view of that mall, which was enclosed at the time, from the early 1970s, courtesy of Picture Enfield.

This week's trivia question:
When the first Little League diamond was built at the southern end of the Kosciuszko grounds in the mid-1970s, by what name was it known? Post the answer in the comments section below, or on the Enfield Patch Facebook page.
