ENFIELD, CT — Today's installment of this weekly Enfield history series does not come from our usual source, the Facebook group Picture Enfield, but rather from the 1983 Enrico Fermi High School yearbook, where we catch a glimpse of what had been a familiar site not only there, but in various spots around town.

The farm at the corner of North Maple Street and Moody Road still exists, but this barn which used to service that land was torn down more than 20 years ago. Like every other barn in town, this particular one was visited by "Chip and Chap" sometime around 1982.

"Chip and Chap" left their calling card all over Enfield, with the last standing paint job, "We Love U Kristin," written in honor of a Norwegian exchange student from the Class of 1983, either falling down or being demolished a few years ago on Broad Brook Road.

Being unsure of the legal statute of limitations on acts of trespassing, petty destruction and general tomfoolery by 17-year-olds, I fear potential legal consequences for my classmates, and therefore refuse to identify Chip and Chap as my longtime friends, Chip Dyer and Joe Chappell.

Once a small farming community, Enfield began transforming into a much larger municipality in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Most of the farmland that used to be prevalent in town was sold to developers. The lot on which the pictured barn stood was purchased by Winstanley Enterprises in 2017. Here is a more contemporary look at the land, courtesy of Google Maps.
