ENFIELD, CT — Today's installment of this weekly Enfield history series, courtesy of the Facebook group Picture Enfield, features Slaybard's Package Store, a fixture for decades at 466 Enfield Street. We have been unable to determine exactly when Slaybard's opened and by whom, but according to Enfield land records, the structure was built in 1946.

A complete list of owners and years is not available, but from 1961 to 1971, the store was owned and operated by Michael and Angela Liucci. John C. Gallerani was the owner in the early 1980s, and James DeCarlo took over in 1987 and operated the store for more than a decade.

Slaybard's closed in 1999, and in 2000, Smoker's Discount World opened in that location and remains there today. Here is a more recent photo of the site, courtesy of the Enfield Town Assessor's office.

Last week's trivia answer:
Last week's trivia question was, "John Spellman was the first of only two men in history to win both an Olympic gold medal and an NFL championship. The other did it in the 1960s and 1970s. Name him." The answer: "Bullet" Bob Hayes, who won gold medals in the 100 meter dash and 4 x 100 relay in the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, then was a member of the Dallas Cowboys when they won Super Bowl VI in 1972.
