More Enfield Businesses Opening as Power Is Slowly Restored

Wednesday afternoon figures from CL&P say 70 percent of town still without power.

Enfield is slowly regaining power as more crews have arrived from both CL&P and outside the state.

At 5 p.m., the latest CL&P outage report indicated 13,540 homes, or 70 percent of the town, is still without electricity.

A number of local businesses have begun opening, many for the first time since the Nor'easter hit on Oct. 29. A partial listing culled from various reports include the Raffia Road Service Center, Firestone, Enfield Square, Big Y, ShopRite, Stop & Shop, Chicago Sam's, Dunkin Donuts on Enfield Street, Enfield Produce and McDonald's at the Scitico Plaza .

Long lines were seen at several gas stations, including the Mobil Mart on King Street, the BP station on South Road and the Citgo station in Scitico.

Reports from citizens on Facebook indicate that power has been restored on Elm Street from the corner of Enfield Street to the Five Guys area. The traffic light in front of Asnuntuck Community College remains out.

The town manager's office issued a release asking for more volunteer help at the shelter at Enfield High School. A request has also been made for registered nurses to help there and at the John F. Kennedy Middle School shelter.

Mayor Scott Kaupin reported on the distribution of MREs (Meals, Ready to Eat) on his Facebook page: "Distribution was held today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. 1,360 of 1,584 MREs received were distributed today."

Water filling stations have been established at the fire stations on Weymouth Road, Hazard Avenue and Bacon Road, and at the middle school. They will be open until 9 p.m.

The Department of Motor Vehicles office on Pearson Way will be closed again Thursday due to the power failure. The department issued a news release stating, "DMV will extend the validity and the time to renew driver licenses, non-driver ID cards, vehicle registrations and other credentials expiring October 29 through November 10. They remain valid during that time period, but must be renewed by November 10.  Law enforcement will be notified about these extensions."
