Sears Announces It Will Close Enfield Store Next Spring

The much-rumored closure was confirmed by a company official Wednesday; the auto center will remain open.

ENFIELD, CT — The much-beleaguered Enfield Square sustained another blow Wednesday with the announcement of the pending closure of anchor store Sears.

A statement issued by Howard Riefs, director of corporate communications for Sears Holdings in Illinois, confirmed the much-rumored closure will take effect in mid-April 2017.

"We can confirm that we are making the difficult, but necessary decision to close the Sears store at 90 Elm Street in Enfield," Riefs wrote in the statement. "We have been strategically and aggressively evaluating our store space and productivity, and will be accelerating the closing of unprofitable stores as we have previously announced."

A liquidation sale is scheduled to begin Jan. 6, according to the statement.

The Sears Auto Center will remain open and is not closing, Riefs said.

Eligible employees who will be affected by the closure will receive severance, and will have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores, according to Riefs.
