Throwback Thursday: Do You Remember...?

A weekly feature containing a photo and story about an Enfield business which is no longer in existence.

ENFIELD, CT - In this weekly series, Enfield Patch publishes a photo of a business or landmark in town that is no longer in existence.

Today we deviate slightly from our normal format and show a vacant building formerly located at 699 Enfield Street.

We were unable to locate photos of any of the businesses that inhabited this site throughout the years, but the building itself was torn down in 2012.

Originally, a Friendly's restaurant was here; in fact, the baseball diamond behind it (since replaced by housing) was called Friendly Field.

"As a teenager in the '50s, I spent a lot of time there," longtime local resident Karen (Thibodeau) McGuire said. "It had a wonderful horseshoe booth and a teenage hangout."

The building later housed a Kentucky Fried Chicken and then Schermerhorn's Fish Market, but was vacated in the 1990s and remained empty for many years before being demolished.

The property was sold in 2011, and approval was granted by the Enfield Planning and Zoning Commission in April 2012 for demolition of the building and construction of a new 5,750 square foot Carquest automotive parts retail store on the site.

By the time the building was completed in fall 2013, however, Carquest had been sold to Advance Auto Parts, which already had a thriving store in town on Hazard Avenue, rendering the Route 5 location unnecessary.

The newly-constructed building has not been used, and is currently being offered for sale for $1.2 million through Colliers International.

Enfield Patch invites readers to share their memories of any of these businesses in the comments section below.
