DEEP RIVER, CT — Carroll Gilson, who has lived at Kirtland Commons, in Deep River, for the past 28 years, celebrated his 105th birthday on Tuesday, February 2, 2021. Born in 1916, this spry guy has lived through two pandemics, two world wars, the first landing on the moon, the 1938 hurricane and many more key moments in history.

He served in World War II, where he drove ammunition trucks to the front lines.

"He is a pretty amazing guy," said Executive Director for the Deep River Housing Authority, Joann Hourigan, who has known Gilson for 28 years. "When I asked him how he got to be this age he replied, 'Damned if I know.'"

Gilson, who shares his home with his best buddy Coco the dog, didn't consider himself old when he was 98 and at 105 there are days when he still takes Coco for a walk, (even though there is a dog walker), explained Hourigan.

In an effort to give Gilson an unforgettable birthday celebration, Hourigan has organized a drive-by parade for the monumental event. Cars will be gathering on Saturday, February 6th at 2:30 p.m. at the Deep River Fire Department then head down Main Street, turning down Spring Street where Gilson will be waiting outside at 3 p.m. to view the parade in honor of his milestone birthday.
