Here are the top five stories in Essex-Chester-Deep River today:

  1. Tonight is the night for peak viewing of the rare alignment of five planets. This alignment won't be seen again for decades, and it is coming to a peak after the summer solstice when a crescent moon joins the parade. The procession of planets — Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, in that order — will be visible just above the eastern horizon during an hour or so before sunrise through the end of the month, according to AccuWeather. The best date to mark is before 5 a.m.on June 24, when a crescent moon joins the planetary parade. The planetary alignment is visible without a telescope, though AccuWeather notes that Mercury may be hard to spot because it's the dimmest of the planets and will be the lowest in the sky. (Patch)
  2. Keeping it local, Honeycone Craft Ice Cream in downtown Chester has been highlighted by Ann Nyberg and News 8. The article explains how Honeycone partners with the local brewery, farm and bakery to create its unique and tantalizing flavors, which are the perfect accent to the end of any summer evening.(WTNH.com)
  3. Looking for something fun to do this weekend in the Nutmeg State? Here is a list of more than 25 things to do in CT this weekend. What events and activities will you attending? (CT Insider)
  4. If you are accustomed to taking a swim at Roger's Lake in Old Lyme, or if you frequent the lake for boating and fishing fun, you might want to know that according to an Old Lyme press release, "the Lake had an herbicide treatment for the aquatic invasive weeds identified by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station on Thursday, June 23. The Pond and Lake Connection performed the treatment per DEEP Permit: AQUA-2022-083. The only restriction with this treatment is that the water should not be used for irrigation from June 23 through June 30. Signage has been posted around the lake at all access points. (Patch)
  5. A new independent coffee shop has opened in Old Saybrook and it's getting a lot of attention. Taking up residency in the former Dunkin Donuts building, Mad Coffee Roasters is a family-owned, small-batch roasting company, according to the business' website. (Patch)

Are you an Essex-Chester-Deep River resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)

To learn more, visit Masterworks.io, where Essex-Chester-Deep River Daily readers can skip the waitlist.
