CHESTER, CT — First Selectwoman Lauren Gister wrote a letter to the town focused on Covid-19 updates.

Dear Chester,

The latest infection numbers in Chester seem to be similar to the general infection rates across Connecticut. There have been 9 new positive cases in the past 7 days. For the first time that I can remember, however, the hospitalizations in CT seemed scarily to be targeted at Middlesex County (10 out of the 12 new hospitalizations today were in our county). These numbers illustrate clearly how important it is that we continue to maintain our safeguards and get our residents and loved ones vaccinated as quickly as possible.

I am happy that we have the wonderful and well-organized staff at our health department, who have been busy getting vaccines in the arms of our first responders and health care workers for the last three weeks. Additionally, these vaccines have been shown to be effective and safe, with few if any side effects. Soon the next category of people will be able to register for the vaccine, probably next week depending on the availability of vaccines. This will be a broad group of people, expected to include teachers and administrators working in our school buildings, farm workers, people over the age of 65, grocery store clerks, and various other workers classified as "essential". We will have more information in the next couple of days and will pass along instructions for registering for and making an appointment to get the vaccine as soon as it is available. Please be patient - this will be a process that will depend on the availability of vaccines and how many vaccination locations are available - I anticipate that it will be something of a moving target.

Be well,
