The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Essex-Chester-Deep River.

Hello all. I'm Nicole Fallon-Peek and I'm filling in for your usual curator Karena on today's Essex-Chester-Deep River Daily. Now, onto the most important things happening around town.

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny. High: 88 Low: 68.

Here are the top three stories today in Essex-Chester-Deep River:

  1. As colleges return for the fall semester, experts say Connecticut students are at risk of contracting monkeypox. With both in-state and out-of-state students dorming at area schools like UConn, the University of Hartford, and the University of New Haven, health experts worry about the transmissible nature of the disease. Cases of monkeypox are on the rise across the United States, including 69 cases in Connecticut as of Wednesday. (CT Insider)
  2. The Essex Foundation Board of Directors has chosen a Chester resident who will receive the 2022 Elizabeth Barnes Callendar and Mary Francis Barnes Memorial Scholarship. Each year, the $3,000 scholarship is given to one local high school or postsecondary student or graduate pursuing studies related to land conservation and preservation. The Board selected Kyra Brennan, a rising second-year forestry major at the University of Maine, for her "enthusiasm for the outdoor world and chosen field of study." (Zip06.com)
  3. Save the date for a family-friendly, accessible, and inclusive walk in Deep River! Local organization A Little Compassion, which focuses on supporting young adults with disabilities, will host its first Compassion Walk on Oct. 1.
