ESSEX — Ryce Libby officially joined the Essex Volunteer Fire Department at their December meeting. A senior in high school, Ryce said she was inspired by her mother, Essex selectwoman Stacia Libby, to give back to her community and volunteer her time.

Interested in becoming an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Ryce is very excited about her new endeavor.

"I am looking forward to helping people when they need it the most," said Ryce. "I am definitely nervous, but I know I can do this and as I learn more, I will be able to help even more."

Although she is currently a "probationary member," of the Fire Department, Ryce has already been out on a few calls and has done well,” said Essex Volunteer Fire Department Chief Aron Schumacher, who explained that for now, Ryce is limited in her on-call duties, until she gets more training.

“We are always excited to get a new member to the department, but especially a young person who is eager to learn. We look forward to working with Ryce to help her serve the community,” said Schumacher.

Ryce, who is the seventh female to become part of the 55-member department, is also the youngest female firefighter. She is looking forward to the 150 hours of EMT training classes that she will hopefully start after the first of the year, depending on how COVID is progressing at the time.

“I think it will be rewarding; knowing I am helping people and being part of our community,” said Ryce. “Everyone at the department becomes like your family and it's great to be a part of such a great group of people."

Schumacher said the department is always in need of more volunteers and all are welcome.

“Our philosophy is that everyone has something unique to bring to the table and we are always looking to add diversity and expand our department,” said Schumacher, who is happy to welcome Ryce to her new volunteer role.
