Important Information From the Chester Tax Collector

Tax information for Chester residents.

CHESTER, CT — Important information from the Chester Tax Collector:

The second half installment of RE & PP taxes and new MV supplemental bills are due Jan 1st, 2021 but because of newest Executive Order 9R from the Governor, payments may be made in January, February or March with no interest. This is true for all taxpayers except escrow companies, who must pay during January, and “landlords” who must apply for deferral, otherwise their bills become delinquent on Feb 2nd. 2021 this year. Also, the Board of Finance & Selectmen have also chosen to have the interest rate be 3% for anyone late paying these January installment bills and this lower interest rate will cover the 3 month period of January, February or March
2021.

Since townhall is closed to the public at this time, we request as many as possible to either mail in their payment with a signed check, use their bank to do an online payment or drop off their payment in the mail slot inside Town Hall on the same wall that has the sign inside that says Essex Savings Bank. The mail slot is clearly marked Town Hall. Please try to NOT use the outside box since that is for the use of Town Clerk for legal documents. If paying with cash to either clear up a delinquent bill or that is how you want to pay, please call during our normal hours to set up an appointment to meet us in the lobby for you to pay the cash. Do NOT leave cash in the mail slot. All payments by check should be in an envelope so that the payment does not get mixed with any other paperwork placed in that mail slot. Be sure to sign your check and you could add your phone number or email if we have any questions.

Our hours during January are Mon, Tues and Thurs from 9-12 and 1-4 and on Wednesday just 9-12 noon. Keep in mind tax information is online! Go to “mytaxbillchesterct” and type last name and first initial of who you are searching for or switch to property option and type in the address. It is easy and extremely helpful with us being a part time office. This also gives you information that you might need for the upcoming IRS time frame. You could even print out receipts. Payments posted on any given day will show up on the next day. We do NOT accept debit or credit cards but the online payment with your bank works even better with usually no fees from us or your bank. Any questions, you could email the Tax Collector at TaxCollector@chesterct.org
