New At Essex Transfer Station: Food Scrap Collection!

ESSEX, CT — More ways to recycle being offered at the Essex Transfer station starting April 5.

According to a press release put out by Sustainable Essex:

Beginning Monday, April 5 th, the Town of Essex will offer food scrap collection at the Essex Transfer Station FREE to Essex residents. Valid ID must be presented to prove town residence. Here is your chance to do something small that could help the environment in a big way!

To take part in the Town’s FREE food scraps program, you just need to be an Essex resident! Accepted items are described will be posted at the transfer station and online at essexct.gov/landfilltransfer-station. Food scraps can be brought in paper bags, compostable bags, or in a container and dumped directly into the food scrap bins. Please, no plastic bags or plastics of any kind! The Town has teamed up with Blue Earth Compost who will remove the scraps and bring them to Quantum Biopower where the scraps are composted in its anaerobic digestor, producing gases (methane and carbon dioxide – which are used to produce electricity), mulch and compost blends.

By participating in this program residents will be doing their part to improve waste management in CT, save money, help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and be a part of the effort to address climate change!

HOW TO DO IT:
1. Collect your food scraps in a kitchen collection container and store them on your
counter or under your sink.
2. Most residents will fill this container 3-4 times per week. It’s suggested to
have a larger bin for weekly storage and for transporting the scraps to the
Transfer Station.
3. BRING your transportation bin (and your ID) to the Transfer Station to
dispose of your food scraps for FREE.
4. The Transfer Station is open 7 am-3 pm Monday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday.
