ESSEX, CHESTER, DEEP RIVER, CT — Congratulations to photographer Richard Spearrin for winning this week's cover photo contest with this fantastic shot of a bald eagle in motion from the Riverside Landing in Essex.

Proof that the beauty and wonderment of nature is all around us, this shot is a reminder of what an amazing place we live in.

Eagles almost disappeared completely from the state of Connecticut by the late 1990's. However, defying the odds, the magnificent, majestic raptors made a huge comeback in the state, thanks to conservation efforts. Today, eagle numbers in the nutmeg state are strong, and these beautiful birds can often be seen from the banks of the Connecticut River, hunting for their dinner or nesting with their mates. Keep your eyes open!
