ESSEX, CHESTER, DEEP RIVER, CT — What began in 2012, as a way to promote generosity and encourage good, has grown into a globally embraced day of giving called Giving Tuesday and this year it is on the calendar for today.

With a wholesome message and the intent of harnessing the power of good, according to the GivingTuesday website, this one-day celebration of donating, founded by New York’s 92nd Street Y, in partnership with the United Nations Foundation, was created as a movement to unleash the power of people and organizations to transform their individual communities around the world.

Now, the annual giving day, which has become the largest movement of its kind in the world, is a ritual of sorts. Individuals and organizations alike, look forward to this day as marking the beginning of the season of giving.

In 2019, GivingTuesday became its own organization, led by GivingTuesday co-founder Asha Curran as its CEO. This year, perhaps more than any other, many non-profits who have not been able to hold their usual fundraisers are hoping that the power of GivingTuesday will be great and that the generosity of many will be overflowing.

So, in the spirit of GivingTuesday’s mission of inspiring generosity, if you have the means to do so, choose your favorite local, national or global non-profit, donate what you can and encourage others to do the same.
