Update: Bear Captured in Fairfield

There are have been multiple reports of bear sightings in Fairfield throughout the day.

Update: The bear was captured in a neighborhood off Stillson Road, according to the Connecticut Post. No one was hurt.

Several black bear sightings have been reported in Fairfield on Thursday.

Patch reader Amy Seitel reports she saw a bear come from a woodsy area near the ramp to I-95 South, before it crossed over Stephens Lane into a yard on Sunnyridge Ave then through the side yard on the corner of Sunnyridge and Stephens.

Seitel called 911 and police arrived and she last saw the bear go into a backyard on Black Rock Avenue.

The Connecticut Post reports that police believe there may be more than one bear in the area due to the number of sightings called in.

Police Chief Gary MacNamara told the Post that the department received reports of bears roaming in the area of Congress Street and Hoydens Hill Road this morning and behind Fire Station 2 on Jennings Road later in the day.

Police are encouraging residents to call them if they spot a bear in the area.

The Connecticut DEP offers the following information:

If you see a bear:

  • Enjoy it from a distance.
  • Advertise your presence by shouting and waving your arms or walk slowly away.
  • Never attempt to feed or attract bears.
  • Report bear sightings to the Wildlife Division, at (860) 675-8130.
