Opinion: Community Leaders Praise Hwang’s Integrity and Vision for Fairfield
Long-time elected officials come out in support of Tony Hwang for First Selectman
The following opinion essay is by the Fairfield Republican Town Committee:
Fairfield, CT — August 19, 2025 — State Senator Tony Hwang today announced his candidacy for First Selectman in Fairfield’s pending special election, pledging to provide steady leadership, unity, and service above self.
“The sudden passing of our First Selectman is a profound loss for Fairfield,” Hwang said. “Now, more than ever, we need a leader who can guide, heal, and unite our town. I am ready to serve Fairfield with energy, experience, and a deep belief in our shared future.”

Hwang, who has represented Fairfield as an RTM member, State Representative, and is currently a State Senator, is known for bipartisan problem-solving and his commitment to schools, public safety, and fiscal responsibility. Local leaders said that his record makes him uniquely prepared for the role.
Former State Representative and Fairfield RTC leader Laura Devlin said Hwang “has always led with integrity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to Fairfield,” while Board of Finance member Jim Walsh praised his financial stewardship: “Tony understands the importance of fiscal responsibility and long-term planning. His experience and independent leadership are exactly what Fairfield needs.”

RTM Minority Leader Jeff Steele added that Hwang’s accessibility and results have earned the community’s trust. I’ve known Tony for over 20 years. He’s a constant presence in town, listening and delivering results. As First Selectman, I have no doubt he’ll lead Fairfield with unity, respect, and vision.
For Hwang, a special election is more than filling a vacancy. “This is about healing divisions and building a stronger future for our town,” he said. “I am ready to work every day for the people of Fairfield, with transparency, accountability, and service above self.”
A petition drive is now underway to request a special election, as permitted by the Town Charter and State law. Anyone interested in signing the petition should email fairfieldpetition@gmail.com.
RTC Chair Devlin said she expected Senator Hwang to be formally endorsed as the Republican candidate for First Selectman at a caucus to be held later this month.
