Don't Fall For This Fake Cop Scam, Fairfield Police Warn

The department is also hosting a "Scam Seminar" this month to teach residents how to spot a con.

FAIRFIELD, CT — Fairfield police are warning residents to be on the lookout for a scam in which criminals pose as police officers to solicit money over the phone for bail

Such phone calls are a scam, police warn, and the criminals sometimes use a phone number that appears to be from the department.

"In some cases, the caller is spoofing the Fairfield Police Department phone number," Fairfield police officials wrote on Facebook (see below). "As a reminder, the Fairfield Police Department will never request money over the phone and does not accept credit cards for bail."

Fairfield police said that if you are not sure if you are speaking to a real police officer, hang up and call the department's non-emergency line at 203-254-4800.

"A dispatcher or officer will assist in confirming the call and ensuring a legitimate officer can contact you if needed," officials said. "If you receive one of these calls, do not provide any personal or financial information."
