FSW Inc., a 164 year old non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, whose mission is to empower people in the greater Bridgeport area to build a brighter future.
Out guests informed us that literacy programs definitely save and change lives, giving recent immigrants the chance to thrive in our area. FSW, under its Literacy Volunteers program, has several programs
which include Basic Literacy, for those who attended school in the United States, but need assistance with reading and writing skills, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) for adult immigrants who benefit by improving their
English language capabilities as well as guidance in integrating into American society and culture.

There are many opportunities for members who wish to volunteer to be an English tutor. No prior teaching experience is required. Future tutors receive several hours of training before they meet their assigned
students. Classes are small: usually oneon one for the Basic Literacy, and up to five students for ESOL. Times and
locations are chosen by the tutor (e.g., a local library, a church meetingroom). The next training session will
begin next week; more information can be obtained by calling Paula Reed at 203-368-5640.
