Opinion: Facts Over Politics: Setting the Record Straight

The following opinion essay is by the Fairfield Democratic Town Committee:

The Fairfield Democratic Town Committee (DTC) takes issue with the ongoing misinformation being spread by the Fairfield Republican Town Committee (RTC) regarding the appointment of Acting First Selectman Christine Vitale to complete the remainder of the late First Selectman Bill Gerber’s term. While the RTC has the legal right to petition for a special election, their misleading statements and efforts to confuse voters cannot go unaddressed.

Here are the facts:

NOT A “BACKROOM DEAL”
Contrary to what Republicans would have the public believe, the First Selectman appointment is not a “backroom deal” arranged by "party insiders." Fairfield’s Town Charter clearly outlines the timing and process for filling a First Selectman vacancy. The vote to appoint Acting First Selectman Christine Vitale as First Selectman will take place Monday, August 25th at 7:30 PM at the Fairfield Public School Administration Building, 501 Kings Highway East. This meeting is open to the public, publicly noticed, and fully in accordance with the Charter.

The Charter also specifies that the appointee must belong to the same political party as the person they are replacing, and it identifies which duly elected officials make the selection. In this case, those officials are Democrats.

Christine Vitale, Fairfield’s highest-ranking Democratic official and Bill Gerber’s designated successor, has already been serving in this role for two months. She is by far the most qualified and logical choice for this appointment.

THE VOTERS HAVE ALREADY SPOKEN
Republican calls to “let the voters decide” ignore the fact that voters already did. In 2023, Fairfield residents elected the Democratic administration of Gerber-Vitale to lead our town for four years. Christine Vitale received more votes than any other candidate in that election, reflecting strong voter confidence in her leadership. Voters will have another opportunity to make a choice in November 2027, when this term ends. Suggesting otherwise misrepresents the democratic process and undermines the will of the people.

FAIRFIELD NEEDS STABILITY, NOT DIVISION
Christine Vitale has already been guiding, healing, and uniting Fairfield as Acting First Selectman—and she will continue to do so following her official appointment and swearing in. Her steady, principled, bipartisan leadership has helped our community navigate this difficult moment in our town’s history. A costly and unnecessary special election would do the opposite—dividing our town, wasting taxpayer dollars, and creating political turmoil when what Fairfield needs most is stability and continuity.

Following our Town Charter at this moment is how we protect democracy and respect the will of the voters. The RTC’s attempt to sidestep it with a state statute under the guise of “letting voters decide” isn’t about democracy at all—it’s about overturning the election they lost.

If the RTC succeeds in forcing a special election, the DTC will be ready to fully support Christine Vitale. We are confident that the voters of Fairfield will reaffirm their trust in her proven leadership, experience, and commitment to Fairfield. Fairfield deserves steady leadership, not political games—and Christine Vitale will continue to provide exactly that.
