Opinion: Facts Over Politics: Supporting Christine Vitale for First Selectman

The following opinion essay is by the Fairfield Democratic Town Committee:

Following the Fairfield Board of Selectmen’s 30-day deadline to appoint a new First Selectman, Fairfield Democratic Town Committee Chairman Steve Sheinberg released the following statement:

“Following the very sad and untimely passing of First Selectman Bill Gerber on July 15, the Fairfield Board of Selectmen was unable to agree on his successor within the 30-day deadline. While we disagree with Republican Brenda Kupchick's decision not to support her Democratic colleague, Selectman Christine Vitale, during those public meetings, we respect her decision. Fortunately, our town charter clearly outlines the next step when the Board cannot agree: the decision now moves to a group of ten Democratic officials who were elected by the Fairfield voters.

Contrary to what some Republicans have suggested, this process is not a ‘backroom deal’ or a ‘coup’—it is the legal, transparent procedure established by Fairfield’s charter and state law. The vote for Fairfield’s next First Selectman will take place at a publicly-noticed meeting, open for all residents to observe on August 25th at 7:30 PM. This ensures full transparency and accountability.

We have many reasons to support Christine Vitale as the next First Selectman. She was elected to the Board of Selectmen alongside Bill Gerber and received the most votes of any candidate in that race. Before his passing, First Selectman Gerber named her as his designated successor, recognizing her proven leadership. She is Fairfield’s highest-ranking Democratic official, a former Chair of the Board of Education, and has served on the Board of Selectmen since 2023.

Since the tragic passing of Bill Gerber, Acting First Selectman Christine Vitale has led Fairfield with professionalism and stability. She has managed the responsibilities of town government effectively and with a steady hand.

For all of these reasons, the Fairfield Democratic Town Committee fully supports Christine Vitale to be officially appointed on August 25th, through the process outlined in our town charter, as Fairfield’s next First Selectman. At a time when our community needs steady leadership, Christine has demonstrated she is ready to serve with transparency, accountability, and dedication to the people of Fairfield.”
