In Colombia, Scalera used his foot skills, which he credits to Coach Rojas, to be able to compete at such a high level. “In Revolution, we learn to pass and work together, not just boot and scoot. In Colombia, I learned how to head the ball because they don’t have restrictions on this there,” says Scalera.
Scalera began playing soccer at the age of two, where he met Rojas at a soccer clinic. “We would follow him anywhere!” Scalera’s mother says. On top of enjoying soccer while in Colombia, Scalera also celebrated his 9th birthday at a local Chuck E. Cheese.
Kunar, from Easton, CT started playing soccer when he was 5 years old. He started playing with RUFC at just 7 years old. Now at 9, his dedication and love for soccer has led him to an incredible opportunity.
“[Coach Roja] says winning is great, but it’s not all about the winning at my age. It’s about using all of the tactical and technical skills I learn and applying them on the field; and if I know I have done that, then I am proud of myself,” said Kunar.
When asked about his experience in Colombia, Kunar reflects on all of the people he met. “I look forward to spending the time with all the other kids from different countries who are on the team. I have made some nice friends.”
