Fairfield Republicans Successfully Engage College Students

Everyone wants to see engagement with college students until it’s Republicans who do it. The Democrats are mad we beat them at their own game.

Through interactions with students it was becoming clear that there was confusion about their ability to vote locally, so we sought to clarify that. Through ingenuity, we were able to reach students by email but the RTC was never provided with an email list of students by anyone- not by the University, anyone associated with the University, or the Town of Fairfield.

The Fairfield RTC message to students was informative and positive. We sought to inform them of their ability to register and vote in Fairfield, reinforce that wherever they vote, they can only vote one time in an election, and to provide information on our Republican candidates.

With early voting starting this year, Fairfield became one of only two towns in the state with more than one early voting location. Mansfield established a second polling location at the UConn Bookstore. When asked about the Mansfield location, Lt. Gov. Bysiewicz said “Young people can make a huge difference in Connecticut, provided they make their voice heard by voting.”

For years Democrats have worked to pass legislation that would make polling locations on college campuses mandatory for the very goal of engaging students to vote. These efforts were supported by Fairfield Representative Cristin McCarthy Vahey, who voted in favor, and Fairfield Democrat registrar Matt Waggner who submitted testimony in favor. In an article last month in the CT Mirror, Mr. Waggner is quoted as saying "the town's unregistered student population living on the campuses is the "missing piece" in the town's registered voting population. He went on to say that if we don't make it "normal and expected for students to participate, then basically, they won't get engaged."

So that's what we did. We reached out to get students engaged. The Fairfield RTC works to reach voters in every way possible and we will continue to work to get the vote out in support of our candidates.

The gaslighting by Fairfield Democrats is no surprise given their dissemination of misinformation. It’s past time they end their spread of falsehoods, confusion, and deception.
