Fairfield Warde Survives, Advances In Class LL Basketball Tournament

The Mustangs held on for a last-second victory over Xavier in the first-round of the state tournament Monday night.

FAIRFIELD, CT — Fairfield Warde survived a last-second scare from No. 23 Xavier and advanced to the second round of the Class LL state tournament with a 55-54 victory Monday night in Fairfield.

With the 10th-seeded Mustangs holding a one-point lead with 1.2 seconds to go in the game, Xavier’s final shot came off a long inbounds pass and bounced off the side of the rim to the floor, according to GameTimeCT.

Warde coach Ryan Swaller told Derek Turner of GameTimeCT after the game that his “heart dropped for a second as the ball rolled around the rim.”

Sean Conway led Warde with 16 points.

Jackson Benigni scored a game-high 20 points for Xavier.

Fairfield Ludlowe saw its season come to an end with a 74-43 loss to No. 5 Weaver. The Falcons were seeded No. 28 in the tournament.

Fairfield Warde will travel to play No. 7 NFA Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
