Hateful Rhetoric Has No Place in Fairfield Leadership
Calling Out RTM Rep. Longo's Extremism and Demanding Accountability
In the wake of the horrifying deadly shooting of conservative Activist Charlie Kirk, leaders across the political spectrum have stood together to denounce political violence and recommit to the values of unity, democracy, and peaceful discourse. The Fairfield Democratic Town Committee (DTC) joined with voices nationwide in calling this act what it is: evil. We reiterated what Americans know all too well — that gun violence is a scourge in our country, and that thoughts and prayers are not enough. We need action.
Sadly, one of Fairfield’s own elected officials chose a different path. Instead of uniting the community, Representative Town Meeting (RTM) member Melissa Longo — the former head of the Fairfield Republican Party, now seeking re-election in District 1 — unleashed a series of hateful, extremist attacks in response to our statement.
In her public comment on the DTC post, Ms. Longo called Democrats “faithless, God hating evil, vile people,” and declared that “Democrats are killing this town, this state, and trying (unsuccessfully) to kill our republic.” In a separate public post that she began with “F*ck the left,” she also told all those who disagree with her views to “f*ck off.”

This is not the language of a leader. This is not the behavior of someone fit to represent Fairfield residents — Democrats, Republicans, and unaffiliated voters alike. It is the language of division, hatred, and extremism.
Fairfield deserves better.

Ms. Longo’s rhetoric stands in stark contrast to the calls for unity issued by responsible leaders in both parties after this tragedy. It also exposes the hollowness of State Senator Tony Hwang’s campaign messaging, as he seeks to unseat our First Selectman Christine Vitale in what he calls an effort to “heal” and “unite” our community. His messaging demands we “be kind” and claims “bipartisanship.” We ask Senator Hwang directly: Do you condemn this rhetoric coming from your own party? Do you believe this is the example Fairfield’s elected officials should set?
This is not an isolated incident. Ms. Longo has a long history of posting inflammatory, hateful commentary online — including anti-trans, pro-gun, and anti-Democrat attacks. Time and again, her Party has looked the other way. Fairfield Republicans have enabled this extremism by refusing to hold their own members accountable.
Enough is enough.
We call on Melissa Longo to resign her seat on the RTM immediately and remove her name from the ballot for this November's election. We call on the Fairfield Republican Party and Tony Hwang to condemn her rhetoric in no uncertain terms. And we call on Fairfield voters to remember this moment when they consider who they want representing them in Town government.
Fairfield is a community of neighbors. We can disagree on policy, but hatred, vitriol, and extremism have no place in our civic life.
Fairfield Democrats will always stand for unity, respect, and democracy — and we will always call out dangerous rhetoric when we see it.
