Report: Sexual Assaults on the Rise at Connecticut College Campuses

Fairfield University had four reported sexual assaults in 2013, Sacred Heart University had one.

The number of sexual assaults on Connecticut college campuses jumped 25 percent in 2013 compared with the previous year, newly released data show.

Connecticut Health I-Team reports that among 19 colleges and universities in the state, 104 assaults were reported last year, up from 83 in 2013. The data on assaults was provided by the colleges, as required under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.

In 2013, UConn had the greatest number of reported sex assaults with 23, followed by Trinity College in Hartford with 21 and Yale University in New Haven with 12.

The figures include only Connecticut schools that have on-campus housing.

There were two reported sexual assaults at both schools in September, 2014.

A Sacred Heart University student was sexually assaulted on Labor Day when a man broke into her off-campus home on Berkeley Road around 3 a.m. Police have identified Edibaldo “Eddie” Duran, who may also be known as Eddie Guerrero, as the suspect and have an active arrest warrant for him.

A few days later at Fairfield University, an 18-year-old female student said she was drugged at a campus party and was later forced to perform a sex act on a male student.

Overall, the number of assaults reported on Connecticut campuses has climbed over the past five years, according to Connecticut Health I-Team. There were 47 reported in 2009, 75 in 2010, 70 in 2011 and 83 in 2012.
