Opinion: Transparency and Accountability In Fairfield

As budget season approaches, I am compelled to raise urgent concerns regarding the mismanagement of Fairfield’s resources which poses significant financial risks to taxpayers and the town’s operational stability. I urge the Board of Finance to exercise its statutorily mandated oversight to address these issues before they lead to increased taxes and reduced services for our residents.

This mismanagement raises numerous questions that demand immediate answers:
Who is overseeing Fairfield’s $370 million budget, and why has the CFO position remained vacant for over a year?
Why are employees leaving, and what is being done to make the workplace more welcoming.
Why did we provide the interim CFO/COO a $100,000 emergency vehicle? what is his need for it?
Why is he overseeing Emergency Management and who authorized this?
Why are we creating new departments and positions outside the budgeted guidelines, and potentially violating the Town Charter?
It is my understanding that we have significant capital project costs coming up which Include the Waste Water Treatment Plant’s infrastructure needs Are we the taxpayers looking forward to increased sewer fees due to spending outside the budget?

Undue burdens on the taxpayers is unfair and unacceptable as we are left to fund inefficiency while essential services are neglected. What happened to transparency and fiscal responsibility we were promised?

I urge the Board of Finance to take immediate action by:
Investigating potential charter violations related to unbudgeted positions and expenditures.

Ensuring all future expenditures align with the budget and Town Charter guidelines.

We the Taxpayers can ill afford more increases
