FARMINGTON, CT — Here are some recent notable accomplishments by local college students, as provided by readMedia Newswire.

Colgate University, Hamilton NY

  • Catherine Ferri, a member of the Colgate University Class of 2020, has earned the spring 2018 Dean's Award for Academic Excellence. Ferri is a graduate of Miss Porter's School from Farmington. Ferri's current major is English. Students who receive a term grade point average of 3.3 or higher while completing at least three courses earn the spring 2018 Dean's Award for Academic Excellence.

Union College, Schenectady NY

  • Three students from Farmington were named to the 2018 Dean's List at Union College: Alexandra Appel, a member of the Class of 2021, majoring in History and Russian and Eastern European Studies; Sophie Borg, a member of the Class of 2019, majoring in Psychology; and Julianne Loree, a member of the Class of 2018, majoring in Economics and Political Science. Students with at least a 3.50 grade point average for the entire academic year were honored with the academic achievement.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester MA

  • A pair of Farmington residents were among students from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) who recently completed intense, hands-on research projects. Griffin Cecil, a member of the class of 2019 majoring in computer science, was a member of a student team that completed a project through the WPI project center in London. The project was titled LearnPads for Schools. In their project summary, the students wrote, "Our team's goal was to identify how The Postal Museum might deploy these tablets to improve the effectiveness and consistency of the in-gallery experience." Jason Ashton, a member of the class of 2019 majoring in computer science, was a member of a student team that completed a project through the WPI project center in Namibia. The project was titled Transport Corridor Mobile Phone Application. In their project summary, the students wrote, "Our goal was to help the Walvis Bay Corridor Group improve the safety and efficiency of trucking in southern Africa by furthering the development of an informational smartphone application."
