NEWA All-Academic team
Ryan Rigney of Farmington was one of 17 WPI wrestlers recognized on the NEWA All-Academic team. To earn All-Academic honors, student-athletes must have been a major contributor to the team and have GPA of 3.10 or higher. Earlier this season, the Engineers achieved the second highest team GPA of the 15 teams entered at the conference's dual meet championship.
Rho Chi Honor Society
Jessica Mercadante was among the newest members from University of the Sciences inducted into the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy Alpha Tau Chapter of Rho Chi, the Academic Honor Society in Pharmacy, on April 1, 2016. The Rho Chi Honor Society recognizes and encourages academic excellence.
Mercadante is a doctor of pharmacy student from Unionville.
To be nominated for membership in Rho Chi, a student must rank among the top 20 percent of his or her class and have completed at least the fall semester of their fourth year. The society also accepts membership for graduate students, faculty, alumni, as well as an honorary membership. New members are inducted into Rho Chi during the spring semester of each year.
One student, two honor societies
Olivia Lathrop of Farmington was welcomed into Chi Alpha Sigma National Honor Society on March 1, at the Western New England University chapter's annual induction ceremony. Lathrop, who is majoring in Sport Management, is a member of the Volleyball team at Western New England University.
As a component of the CHAMPS/Life Skills program to foster athletic excellence, the Athletic Department annually inducts deserving student-athletes in the National Student Athlete Honor Society. Chi Alpha Sigma recognizes student-athletes who have completed five semesters of higher education, have earned a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.4, and who exhibit distinguished character in the community.
Lathrop was also welcomed into Omicron Delta Kappa National Honor Society on April 19, at the Western New England University chapter's annual induction ceremony. Omicron Delta Kappa is a national leadership honor society that recognizes and encourages achievement in scholarship, athletics, campus or community service, social and religious activities, as well as campus government, journalism, speech and the mass media, and creative and performing arts.
Biology Award at ECSU
Eastern Connecticut State University's Biology Department recently bestowed awards upon students who achieved excellence in academic excellence, research and as teaching assistants.
Christina Welch of Farmington was one of the awardees. Welch was awarded an Academic Excellence Award and a scholarship from the Michael F. Gable Biology Student Assistantships Endowed Fund.
Stonehill College Honor Society Lambda Epsilon Sigma
Farmington native Erika M. Isner, a member of the Class of 2017, was recently inducted into Stonehill College's Lambda Epsilon Sigma Honor Society. The purpose of the Society is to recognize and promote scholarship.
Isner is a Psychology & Communication major.
Juniors and seniors who have attained a 3.50 cumulative grade point average are invited to apply for consideration. Acceptance into the society is based on evidence of academic achievement, of a pursuit of learning that extends beyond the classroom environment, and of an ability to communication effectively through writing.
Additionally, in order to be inducted into the Society, the student must be recommended by faculty from both within and outside of the student's major.
