Farmington Has Two Finalists For Major HS Student Honor

One attends Farmington High, the other a private school in Kent.

FARMINGTON, CT — Two Farmington students have recently been named candidates for one of the federal government's most prestigious academic designations for high school seniors.

One is a student of Farmington High School, while the other attends private school in Kent, with notifications of 2023 winners to be named later in the school year.

The U.S. Department of Education's U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the president, to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors, according to the USDE.

In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts, federal official said.

In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields.

Each year, up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students.

Farmington candidates for the designation are:

• Anlin A. Hou, Farmington - Kent School

• Matthew S. Leypold, Farmington - Farmington High School
