In a release issued Thursday, police said at about 9:50 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, troopers at Troop H in Hartford were monitoring traffic on I-84 West near Exit 58 in East Hartford when they saw two motorcycles traveling at a high rate of speed.

Police said troopers determined the motorcycles were traveling at speeds of 90 mph and up, prompting them to initiate a motor vehicle stop.

That's when, police said, the two motorcycles accelerated in an apparent effort to flee.

A trooper noticed the Connecticut registration plate displayed on one of the two motorcycles, later identified as a red BMW touring-style motorcycle. It was, police said, registered to an address in Farmington.

The trooper determined the fleeing motorcycle had accelerated to speeds in excess of 124 mph, police said.

"Due to the potential safety risk to the motorcycle operator and other nearby motorists, the Trooper terminated efforts to stop the motorcycle," wrote state police in a statement.

During the investigation that followed, troopers traveled to the address of the BMW motorcycle’s registered owner in Farmington.

As Troopers were speaking with a resident at the address, a red BMW motorcycle and its operator, identified as Veiga, entered the driveway of the residence.

Troopers observed the registration plate, the motorcycle, and the physical appearance of Veiga were consistent with the registration, motorcycle and operator who had fled.

As a result, police said, Veiga was taken into custody and transported to Troop H in Hartford, where he was processed and charged.
