FARMINGTON, CT — Local officials have unanimously approved buying the Farmington Police Department several new portable radios for officers to use out in the field.

The Farmington Town Council last month voted unanimously to approve a $58,189 contract with Woodcliff, N.J.,-based Motorola Solutions Inc. for 10 portable radios.

Farmington Town Manager Kathleen Blonski said the radios will be "interoperable," which will allow the users to communicate with the police officers from other towns.

She said the purchase is part of a multi-year plan replacement schedule of all the portable radios in the police department, and the money is in the town's capital budget.

The reason council approval was required for this contract was that the amount exceeded $50,000.
