Farmington Police Host Ancient Hindu Celebration

FARMINGTON, CT — The local police department engaged in a growing tradition within its ranks Thursday by playing host to a Hindu celebration honoring responders' service.

The ceremony is called "Raksa Bandhana" and it is a celebration within the Hindu communities of south Asia.

Loosely translated into "bond of protection, obligation or care," "Raksa Bandhana features people engaging in a ritual in which amulets, threads or charms are tied to the wrists of those being honored.

In this case, it is the Farmington police and fire departments that were honored by the local Hindu community Thursday.

" This annual Hindu holiday has become a tradition at FPD where members of the Hindu community meet first responders to show their appreciation of our service to the community," wrote the FPD Friday. "We are honored and humbled to share in this celebration."
