FARMINGTON, CT — The Farmington Police Department is seeking public input on how it serves the community through its accrediting agency.

The department has posted links onto social media that instruct the public to offer input to the Commission for the Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), the main accrediting organization for most police departments.

CALEA has created a "public comment portal" for Farmington, allowing it to collect community comments to help the department engage with the people the FPD serves.

Those commenting can do so anonymously or post their name and phone number if they would like more direct contact with the police department, the Farmington PD said.

Police officials, however, caution that CALEA is, merely, collecting data, not engaging in an investigatory activity.

"The portal is not designed as an investigative tool and should not be used for that purpose," wrote the department. "CALEA will not respond to the feedback, other than to confirm submission, however the feedback will provide context as part of the re-accreditation process."

The FPD first became accredited in 1992 and has maintained accreditation since.

Accreditation is key to a department because it holds department operations to "internationally recognized standards."

The community feedback is seen as a tool for CALEA to collect data when the FPD seeks re-accreditation again.
