Statewide Art Awards Presented to Farmington High School Seniors

The award is presented to two students with outstanding ability in the performing and visual arts.​

FARMINGTON, CT — Seniors Mealear Tan and Su "Lillian" Yim have been selected by Farmington High School to receive Art Awards from the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS). The award is presented to two students with outstanding ability in the performing and visual arts. An awards ceremony scheduled in April was postponed due to the new coronavirus pandemic.

Mealear Tan is a talented artist who has been an avid volunteer for the art department yearly since she was a freshman. She helps to paint the sets for every play and musical and has always been an active participant in the Art Club. In the first year of a National Art Honor Society at Farmington, she was elected by her peers to be president. She has worked with the faculty on an interdistrict art program, acting as a mentor and role model to younger students, and worked on a special project involving projection mapping for the end of the year art show.

She would like to study Interactive Digital Media in college, as well as continue with her Latin studies. She is a member of the crew team, a participant in Relay for Life, and was recently awarded the COLT prize for her work in Latin.

Su "Lillian" Yim is a dedicated student musician who aspires to be a professional performing and teaching cellist. Since beginning the cello in Farmington Public Schools' strings program in second grade, she has shown dedication and hard work in her private studies, school orchestra and competitions. From her freshman year, she has been an annual participant in both the Connecticut Northern Region and All-State orchestras. In addition, she was accepted for the National All-Eastern Orchestra, as well as the prestigious 2019 All-National Symphony Orchestra.

She has won several awards in competition, including the Nutmeg Symphony Orchestra competition, as well as the Hartford Music Alliance Competition, at which she earned first place. Her solo career has already begun, having played concertos with the Nutmeg Symphony Orchestra and the Farmington Valley Symphony Orchestra. She is a leader in her school's music department, as well, serving as the principal cellist of the FHS Symphony Strings for the past three years. She has used her talents to play in two musical productions, volunteer at Farmington Summer Strings Academy, and helping the West Woods Silver Strings Orchestra members. In addition to her performance and teaching work, she was the recipient of the Performer to Podium Capstone Award for the 2019-20 school year.
