Life is Too Short to Not Eat Well

Lodge at Cold Spring Sous Chef Horst Zerber makes a delightful desert for residents and guests.

Just a few weeks ago, The Lodge at Cold Spring Executive Chef Nick Mastracchio performed a fantastic cooking demo at The Newington Senior Center. Because of how well received it was, The Lodge decided to open its doors and host another demo for residents and guest alike to see. This time, it was Sous Chef Horst Zerber’s turn to show off skills. Horst is a former pastry chef whose deserts have been fascinating and filling the stomachs of residents since he’s been cooking at the community. So, instead of demonstrating how to make an entrée, Horst decided to show off what he does best: desserts!

The feature for Saturday’s demo was Strawberry Shortcake. After the main meal service had ended, Horst set up right in the dining room and made all the shortcakes individually. Soon enough, a giant line formed in the dining room to get their tasty treats. Some loved it so much that they tried to get seconds before some even got their first one! After it was all done, Horst took the microphone and asked if everyone enjoyed their shortcake. The response was a rousing mix of applause and cheers. “Life’s too short to not eat well,” one of the residents remarked. Anyone who has seen the demos these great chefs have put in recent will most certainly agree that they have been eating very well.
