Seniors Raffle Away Homemade Afghan
Senior Citizens at retirement community created and raffled away a beautiful, homemade afghan.
Not all events and seminars at The Lodge at Cold Spring have to feature a top speaker or personality. In fact, one of the most popular activities at The Lodge is the delightful “Knit and Chat” group. Every Friday at 4:00 PM (unless there’s a special event that day), residents will gather with their yarn and other supplies and start knitting away. Residents have made scarves, hats, and even small blankets, all while sharing laughs and stories with their friends. Some hadn’t even tried their hand at knitting until they saw the creations the group was making. Members of the group will often share their own strategies and techniques with newcomers as well.
Recently, the Knit & Chat group decided to do something really special. They were able to knit together a large afghan, and decided to raffle it away. All of the proceeds went to the residents’ fund, so it could be used something fun and special for residents down the road. Since the car show The Lodge hosted in September, the members had been selling raffle tickets at every major event at the community. All the hard work paid off, they made over $200! Finally, on Friday the 9th, it was time select the lucky winner of the afghan.
The winner was resident Mary Frank, who was so excited she couldn’t wait to her hands on it. The curio cabinet it was stored in was locked, and the key was with the events coordinator, who wasn’t in that day. “Just break the glass, I want my afghan!” she said jokingly with a smile. “I was surprised she won, there were more outsiders names in there than residents,” said one of the members. The group made an amazing afghan, it went to a recipient who would cherish it, and a nice amount of money was made for residents to use for something of their choosing. All in all, everyone went home with a smile.
