  • On Saturday, Aug.17, 2019 more than 270 first-year UVM students, led by 68 upper class leaders began their University of Vermont experience as part of TREK, a unique, 7-day first year enrichment program sponsored by UVM's Department of Student Life. For 40 years, UVM's TREK program has sent new students all over the state of Vermont to explore the region's wilderness, develop leadership skills, and work on community service projects. TREK is one of the biggest and most diverse new-student, collegiate, community building programs in the northeast region. Cora Smith of Glastonbury participated in Farm and Food Crew. A part of the Service TREK program which gives students the opportunity to enhance self-awareness and further develop your understanding of service, leadership, social justice, and civic-mindedness, Farm and Food Trek participants work with a variety of agencies throughout Central Vermont dedicated to promoting food security and feeding folks in need. Over the span of a week, participants explore all aspects of the "food safety net" including working at food distribution sites, and at farms gleaning produce to serve folks in need. Past service sites have included the Vermont Foodbank and Salvation Farms. James Amenta of Glastonbury participated in Hiking. A part of the Wilderness TREK program which provides students the opportunity to build lasting friendships, initiate self-discovery, and explore the people and landscapes that are Vermont, Hiking TREK provides incoming students an opportunity to visit and explore some of the highest, most remote and oldest footpaths in the country - all along the long trail and in the Adirondacks. Hiking on average eight miles per day, traversed through hardwood, trickling streams and learned of the North Country's rich, natural history along the way.
