Coronavirus Glastonbury: First Case Confirmed In Town

GLASTONBURY, CT — On Friday, the Connecticut Department of Public Health confirmed the first positive case of coronavirus in a Glastonbury resident. Town officials shared the announcement.

"Positive cases of COVID-19 in Glastonbury have been expected as community transmission of the virus has been occurring in neighboring communities," said Wendy Mis, the health director for the Glastonbury Health Department. "At this time, we strongly encourage residents to practice preventative measures and social distancing to prevent the further spread of the virus, and to contact medical professionals if they feel symptomatic."

The resident was not identified, nor were the circumstances.

The Glastonbury Health Department will continue its ongoing efforts to protect the public health of community members by continuing to educate citizens on preventative measures and resources for assistance. All residents continue to be advised to wash their hands thoroughly and regularly and to practice social distancing. Residents are encouraged to stay home and avoid interaction with others outside the household, limiting trips out of the home to those of necessity only, such as for groceries or medical appointments.

The Town asks residents to avoid public facilities, social gatherings, and town playgrounds, athletic courts, (e.g. tennis, basketball, etc.), and dog parks until further notice. Although pets have not been found to contract the virus themselves, it is possible for germs to remain on their fur through contact with others therefore please observe social distancing for your pets as well to the best of your ability.

All residents should continue to practice daily preventative actions to help protect their health and the health of others by:

• Staying home when sick, except to receive medical care
• Avoiding close contact with people, especially those who are sick
• Washing hands with soap and water frequently and for at least 20 seconds
• Covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow, throwing tissues in the trash immediately after use, and washing hands after
• Avoiding touching one’s eyes, nose, and mouth
• Cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched objects and surfaces
