GLASTONBURY, CT — Dogs played key roles in nabbing a thief at both the beginning and end of a home break-in Glastonbury, police said.

Credit first goes to a family pet, police said. At nine minutes past midnight on Sunday, a Williams Street East resident was awakened by her barking dog, which alerted the resident to a burglar in the house, police said.

The resident locked herself in a bedroom and called 911, police said.

The thief was gone when officers arrived at the home, but the resident was able to provide a description.

Glastonbury officers, with assistance from a Connecticut State Police canine unit, quickly located the burglar nearby, police said.

The man was in possession of property that had been stolen from the woman's house as well as property found to have been stolen from vehicles in the area, police said.

William Vanderpoel, 28, of no certain address, was taken into custody and charged with first- and third-degree burglary and fifth- and sixth-degree larceny, police said. Vanderpoel was held on a $100,000 bond, police said.
