Glastonbury Council Outlines Next Move for Open Space Purchase Proposal

The tracts are former MDC parcels.

GLASTONBURY, CT - The Town Council has decided to move ahead on a proposal to purchase nine parcels of open space formerly owned by the Metropolitan District Commission.

Council public hearings on the proposal are scheduled for 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26 and Tuesday, Aug. 2 in the Council Chambers at Town Hall, 2155 Main St.

  • The land is located off Keeney Street, Howe Road, Hebron Avenue, Coldbrook Road, Tollgate Road and Dickinson Road.
  • The estimated acreage is 718-plus acres Howe Road, but the specific acreage is to be confirmed by a survey.
  • The purchase price is $15 million - $5 million by the town and $10 million from a state grant. The $5 million town appropriation would be funded through a combination of bond authorization under the reserve for land acquisition and preservation account, and appropriation and transfer from the general fund/unassigned fund balance.
  • The purchase is Subject to boundary survey, environmental analysis and final town council approval.
  • Final Council action is required by Oct. 28.
  • The annual taxes are approximately $88,500.
  • Preliminary analysis indicates the 540-plus acres located off Keeney Street, Howe Road and Hebron Avenue could accommodate 200-plus residential building lots.
