GLASTONBURY, CT — An annual event designed to raise awareness for a serious veterans cause is slated to make its way through Glastonbury on Saturday.

On Saturday, the Peter Monaco Marine Corps League Detachment 40 of Glastonbury is scheduled to stage its 10th "Hike for Heroes," during which detachment members and many other Marine veterans and those from other branches of service hike through Glastonbury for 13 miles.

The 13 miles represent 22 kilometers and 22 represents the average number of veteran suicides per day, organizers said.

Money is raised to support the cause.

The hikers range from elderly veterans to young vets. The detachment begins the hike at 4 a.m. and stops roughly halfway through the event at the Irish American Home Society, 132 Commerce St,, where many volunteers from the Irish American Home Society support the hikers by cooking breakfast.
