Glastonbury School Board to Discuss Extending School Year

At its meeting tonight (Monday, March 11), the Glastonbury Board of Education will discuss whether to extend the school year to June 24.

After last week’s foot of snow and the recent blizzard, the Glastonbury Board of Education is set to discuss extending the school year to June 24 for select schools during their meeting tonight.

Because classes were canceled Friday, some of the district’s schools are set to lose the Monday of April vacation. Buttonball Lane, Hebron Avenue and Smith Middle School are currently set to be in session on April 15. Each of those schools opened a day later than the rest of the district after Hurricane Sandy.

The rest of Glastonbury’s schools—Glastonbury High School, Gideon Welles School, and Eastbury, Hopewell, Naubuc and Nayaug schools—still had an additional day remaining before the cancellation Friday. Any additional snow days will also have to come out of April vacation.

However, the school board is looking to discuss extending the school year for Smith, Buttonball and Hebron Avenue to June 24, rather than cutting into April vacation, when many people may have already made trip plans.

The Board of Education meeting is set to take place at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the town council chambers of Town Hall.
