GLASTONBURY, CT — A section of Commerce Street in Glastonbury was closed Wednesday because of a propane leak.

Municipal officials said that, shortly after 8 a.m. this a contractor performing work for Bemer Petroleum informed the Glastonbury Fire Marshal's office about propane leaks discovered at the Commerce Street business site.

The Glastonbury fire marshal, the fire department, and local police shut down the area from 132 Commerce St. to the corner of Oakwood Drive and Commerce Street.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection's Emergency Response Team also responded to evaluate the situation.

By 1:30 p.m., the propane leaks had been controlled and they are not posing "an immediate threat." town officials said.

"The Town and CT DEEP are continuing to work with Bemer Petroleum to bring the site into compliance with fire and safety regulations," town officials said. "A portion of Commerce Street will remain closed while such efforts are carried out and Glastonbury public safety officials will maintain their stations on site. Community members should please plan travel accordingly. Additional updates will be shared through the Town website as available."
