Second Chance Shop Reopens for the Season

The thrift store, in its 52nd Year, opened its doors Aug. 21.

A local thrift store has re-opened its doors in town center, selling vintage merchandise at discount prices with profits going to a local non-profit.

The Glastonbury , located at 2400 Main St. beneath the Glastonbury Chamber of Commerce, opened its doors for the season on Aug. 21 after having shut its door for the summer months. The thrift store, which sells “gently used clothes for children and adults, books, and other household items” is now in its 52nd year.

“Most people come in and think it’s great,” volunteer Kitty Sullivan said. “It becomes really a community for Glastonbury.”

The store is run by the women of the village auxiliaries and The Village for Families and Children, a non-profit organization that provides behavioral health care and social services to over 6,200 children and families in the Greater Hartford Region, according to their website.

“There’s been a number of families that have been helped by The Village,” auxiliary chair Catherine Graffy said.

Second Chance Stores have branches in Glastonbury, Simsbury, and Suffield. Last year the Glastonbury store donated $80,000 to The Village, with approximately $240,000 in donations coming in from all three stores.

The store accepts donations of all sorts. Those items that aren’t sold in the store are donated to other area charities; a load of blankets that weren’t of high enough quality to sell were donated to a local animal shelter for dog blankets, Graffy said.
