Granby Memorial Softball to Play in State Championship Game
Team faces Waterford after victory over East Haven.

The Granby Memorial High softball team advanced to the state Class M championship game for the second year in a row, thanks to the pitching performance of junior Courtney Ahrens in the semifinals against sixth-seeded East Haven Wednesday.
Granby beat East Haven 7-0, with Ahrens allowing just two hits to East Haven
But head coach Brian McDermott also credited his team with hitting well.

“We can hit anybody. We’re tearing it up as far as this year. As a team, we’re hitting 125 points higher on average than we’ve ever been,” McDermott told the New Haven Register.
Granby Memorial scored two runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Samantha Groskritz, Megan Nilson, Jennifer Szilagyi, Jaimee Kidd and Erin Walsh had RBIs, with the team totaling 14 hits, according to a Courant article.

The Class M championship game will be held Friday at West Haven High School at 7 p.m. The second-seeded Bears (21-1) will face No. 12 Waterford (19-5), who defeated Suffield in the other semifinal.
The Bears are hoping for a different result than last year, when they lost to Rocky Hill 6-0 in the 2012 title game.
