Hail to the king (strawberry that is)!

Did you know that the first berry on each plant is called the "king" strawberry? Not only is it the first to appear and the first to ripen, it's also the biggest.    Not all of my plants have produced a ripe berry yet, but I've been picking about 4-6 per day up until today, when I decided to grab some that were almost there before the rain came back.

No, they won't ripen any more on the counter, but at least this way they won't rot or get eaten by ants. I did pick a few with holes in them but didn't save them for the picture.

There are still lots of green berries and even a few blossoms left out there, so hopefully I'll have some to bring to market next week (East Granby Farmer's Market starts a week from today, 3-6pm at the shopping center located at 3 Turkey Hills Rd - that's Rte 20). In the meantime, we'll be enjoying the king berries while they last.

While I won't be selling any berries this week, you can pay homage to the king at the North Canton Methodist Church at their annual Strawberry Festival on Saturday from 11 til 5.  The church is located at the intersection of Rte 179 and Case Street.

Thank you, thank you berry much!
